SIC and NAICS codes
SIC stands for "Standard Industrial Classification." Each employer in the U.S. reports the activity of the
company under one or more of these codes. Employees are those who pay Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA) tax on their
salary. Therefore, a number of persons in the region are not classified by SIC codes. These include
the self-employed, government workers, and those engaged in works of the church.
NAICS stands for "North American Industry Classification
System" and it is now used by the Census Bureau to classify companies
by activity. The change from SIC to NAICS began with the 1998 County Business
Patterns.
You can get a list of SIC/NAICS codes at
the download page of the U.S. Census Bureau. The two systems are not 100%
comparable so trends in regional employment can not be obtained between the
two classification methods. A summary table for
the region shows the change in annual salary for major NAICS categories
in NE PA. This comparison is based on 1998 and 1999 NAICS data.
