Population Growth

Births, deaths, and migration account for the growth or decline of a region's population. The chart at the right is a composite of the nine counties we cover. It is a stable profile with slight growth over the ten year period represented.

Rate of Growth/Decline

The small annual growth rate started falling in 1992 and went negative in the 1995-96 estimate. This estimated loss continued through July 1999. The 1998-99 rate is negative but the trend is positive.

The 3% "jump" in 2000 shows that the actual growth rate, based on the Census, is higher than the estimates predicted. That is the starting point for the next ten years of estimates.

Net Growth

The chart at the right shows the net result of "natural" growth (Births - Deaths) and migration (Domestic + International) on the population of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The charts of regional population changes for the United States show this in the context of the U.S. and its major regions.
