Four years ago (March 1998) The MAP Center produced its first series of land use/land cover maps for the region. The current update gives us the opportunity to show new data which is more detailed but rather than replace the former project we thought it more informative to show both series. The contrast of the two data sets gives us an appreciation of how our GIS tools and knowledge have progressed. We hope you will agree with this assessment. |

LULC data came in the form of polygons created from aggregated satellite imagery. We further combined categories to produce a general overview. The boundary of USGS quadrangles is visible in the above image and shows that data from different times produced slightly different results. |
NLCD data is in raster (pixel) format. This gives a finer grain to the presentation. In this series we did not aggregate categories so the results are more detailed than the LULC series as we presented it. The improvement is due to our enhanced hardware/software capabilities although the spatial data format also plays a role. |
